Fascism
often capitalized : a political philosophy, movement, or regime (such as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition.

Let's put the shoe on other foot.

Let's say Facebook was conservative. Everything someone DMed or posted about black lives matter or climate change, Facebook would censor or put up warning about misinformation they are getting from government direction.

Would that be acceptable?

Yup, as long as they weren't forced or compelled.

So if the government said, "GETTR, we want you to alert us to anti-vax posts", GETTR could say, "Suck my nards". The issue you all have is that Facebook is saying, "I want to be your bitch, government".
STOP. USING. THEM.

Exactly.

And there's more than one.

As long as the government didn't coerce them into doing so then it would still be on the up-and-up. Of course, that doesn't mean that Facebook would be immune to public backlash.

How awkward is it for you to actually support and embrace fascism?

I'm guessing you're quite comfortable with it, personally.

If companies want special government entitlements and protections, then they need to be held to the same standards. Government cannot discriminate, therefore neither can corporations. Government cannot censor free speech, therefore neither can corporations.

What about churches? Or farmers who receive subsidies from the government? Pretty much every business in this country receives benefits from the government in some form. Do you believe that every single one of those entities should be forced to give up their 1st Amendment rights?

I don't know for sure how you feel about it, but I am all for taxing churches just like a corporation.

Government shouldn't be meddling in the free market to begin with. Much less houses of worship.

And while I know you want me to see the struggling farmer on his 40 acres who "needs" government assistance, I know damn well that the small farmer isn't the real beneficiary of those subsidies. They get scraps. The real beneficiaries... the most dangerous beneficiaries... are Big Agro and the likes of Monsanto, who are bullying and harassing the small farmer into oblivion.

No one is forced to incorporate, therefore no one is forced to do anything.

No Ten Commandments are allowed in the Gov building remember?

Oh you meant like the churches that aren't allowed free speech in Canada?

Or that there are some places where the Church's aren't allowed free speech with their belief in Jesus if they do it in the wrong place?

The issue is because govt taxes and regulates they can coerce indirectly.

I generally believe private business should be able to do what they want. However, these social media giants are beyond that and similar to utilities. They are in a gray area imho that is being exploited.

Simply saying there are alternatives is a bit of a stretch since none have even remotely the same penetration in market place.

I have no issue with Facebook or whoever censoring snuff films, porn, etc. However, I think political speech is too nuanced to effectively censor since there is no one arbitrator of the truth and perspective.

Please point out where I supported fascism?

The government was way more heavy handed when it came to censorship under Truman and Eisenhower.

If you consider the government making recommendations to private companies who are free to ignore them fascism, then I guess you'll have to admit that the US was a full blown fascist state during its "golden age."

They had their own.

Based on ours.

How many in LA were arrested for having meetings in their home for CV-19. I would say your words are shallow when it comes to saying the Church and it's believers are allowed to freely speak about Jesus in public places like our schools for one. They can talk about Mohammed and Trannies all day and say that hate to others from those people who believe in those things is not hate. But if you call a spade a spade, a thug a thug, or a politician a racist who really is, then no free speech for you in the media or on social sites that the world turns to for information.

ATS is too far away from the John Q Publics time to read or try to dig into our complex threads.

The argument will be that anyone can go to a social media platform and hit the flag button that prompts the platform to evaluate a post for violation of its terms and conditions.... so what is wrong with government going on the platform and pushing that same button?

The problem I see is this part:

We are in regular touch with the social media platforms and those engagements typically happen through members of our senior staf

The Administration at the highest level is in regular contact with social media platforms which is a lot more than going on the platform and pushing the flag button so that the platform can apply its T&C to a given post.

Some in this thred have expressed that this behavior is ok so long as the government does not coerce the platform into action... to that I would ask when the leader of the free world asks you to do something isn't there some implied penalty if you do not comply?

When a CEO asks an intern to have sex with him do we not find this to be improper activity simply doe to the power dynamics involved even if no overt threat for refusal is made?

This certainly is a gray area; the Administration is pushing the boundaries of its authority. I am not confident the world would be ok with this if it was the past Administration that was doing this nor if we where not fearful of a pandemic.

I'm not saying the Biden administration is acting dictatorial. But they are certainly opening the door for the next dictator to walk right in.

IT better be a national emergency or the Bill of Rights has more power than the POTUS.

Yet, when the leader of the free world is a liar and I know it, then no way would I capitulate to something that limits peoples rights to freedom of expression.

There was a social media platform that did not comply. It was called Parler, but then government labeled it a troubling ideological hotbed of racism and hate and an echo chamber besides and Big Tech censored it from their networks.

Just wanted to point out that Canada didn't base it's Constitution on yours.

Oh, and we have Free Speech in Church, you just have to lock yourself in a closet, within your basement, 40 miles from any other building or human.

True Story.
