Russian officials on Monday threatened that their country would treat U.S.-led coalition planes in some parts of Syria as targets after the U.S. military shot down a Syrian Air Force jet on Sunday.

Russia's defense ministry said planes flying in Syria, west of the Euphrates River, would be considered targets.

The news came one day after the first time in history a U.S. jet shot down a Syrian plane – and the first time in nearly 20 years the U.S. has shot down any warplane in air-to-air combat.

Oh for pities sake.

Could we not rely on the leaders of the world to keep their metaphorical phalluses inside their trousers for just a few years at a stretch? Is that too much to bloody well a----

* checks out Trump, looks at Putin, rips up shirt and finds the lighter fuel *

Well... screw it then.

* searches for a lighter and a discarded bottle of rum *

Get Russia and USA the heck out of the Middle-East!

How would you feel if China and India were fighting a proxy-war in your backyard?

I have a family member who is an American diplomat to Russia. I should reach out and see what his thoughts are on this. Probably won't amount to much.

Lots of beer and popcorn with that powdered cheese to top it off.

So, let me get this straight. The US takes out a Syrian Airforce jet, and now RUSSIA is basically imposing a "No Fly Zone" on the US over Syria.

I'm wondering why the US shot that plane out of the sky in the first place.

There's actually some confusion. One translation says they will track coalition aircraft with SAMs, other translations say they will escort coalition aircraft.

According to the news reports, the Syrian plane was dropping bombs on one of the rebel groups supported by the US (so a US ally). The US, through the "anti-conflict" channels set up for these purposes, informed the Russians that these were "friendlies" that the Syrian jet was engaging and asked them to back off.

They didn't, and they got whacked...

Because the US supported forces who are supposed to be fighting ISIS are anti Assad and his elected government, they fight Assad
The US want to oust Assad to run the pipeline
The US want to run a Qatar? Gas pipeline through Syria to supply gas to Europe and cut out Russia's dominance in the EU market
The Ruskies are supporting and funding Assad to keep the gas pipeline out of Syria so they don't lose their market in the EU
Money, what else, but let's blame religion

My thinking is this.

Syria is a hot, rubble strewn mess at the moment. There is no peace, nor freedom in the place. Factions ranging from the squabbling rabble, with their AKs and their modified pickups, to professional military forces, are vying for control of streets bombed into a state where they have no value or meaning. Entire cities have been razed to the ground, those which have not been totally flattened, but have been damaged, will have to be razed to the ground, so that the buildings in them can be replaced, since nearly none are left in serviceable states.

Between the intelligence services of the west, on the side of IS, the confusing picture of "moderate rebel groups" which seem like a heap of weapons grade BS and always did, and the OVERT forces of the US, Russia and other players too, there is so much going on, daily, that it seems like an absolutely detestable cats cradle of violence and insanity.

However... do I see Russia engaging in war with the US over a Syrian plane? Nope. Do I see the US doing more stupid crap? Yep. Do I see that eventually leading to escalation!? Yes. Yes I do. How deep, how overt...I cannot tell. Its a mess down there.

Russia is siding with Bashar, so by proxy, anything the US does to him, they do to Russia.

This is the first time after the Cold War when Russia warned USA of direct targeting, as far as I remember. Russia didn't do that during Georgia crisis, sure not in Ukraine. Not in Iraq, not in Serbia, not in Lybia, or any other local conflict. Despite of the strong rhetoric in the UN there weren't warnings and ultimatums of direct clash between Russian and US units. Now there is.

Notice April US bombing of Syrian base when Russia said it was stopping the communication hotline. Now it says the same, PLUS targeting of flying objects. It is not to be considered a rhetoric only, bvecause after April Russia brought S-400 to Syria. Now it is the second time, and already there is a ultimatum-like warning - "your planes cross West of Euphrates and we target them".

IMO WW3 is step away. Whether that step will be made in the next days,w eeks or months, nobody knows.

Let also remember 2017 is the 100th anniversary of the October revolution, if we search for symbolism. June 22 Hitler's Germany attacked Soviet Union in 1941. Sure the situation in 2017 is neither 1917 nor 1941. But for a a superpower to start WW3 there should be something more than a mere incident. The downing of the Russian plane by the NATO member Turkey didn't spark the war though. May be this time it will remain only the Last Warning.
